A family entered the new year heartbroken after their young son lost the ʙᴀᴛᴛʟᴇ to a rare ɢᴇɴᴇᴛɪᴄ ᴅɪsᴇᴀsᴇ on New Year’s Day. Young Micah McEwan lived just 6 months after birth with a severe case of congenital ᴅɪᴀᴘʜʀᴀɢᴍᴀᴛɪᴄ ʜᴇʀɴɪᴀ, which caused a hole in the baby’s diaphragm. The boy had to ꜰɪɢʜᴛ for his life from day one and was given life support just 13 hours after being born. The entire team never left the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.
He’s had nearly 10 sᴜʀɢᴇʀɪᴇs since he was born on July 5. Mother Nicole Brown, 34, and partner Ian McEwan, 35, from Drongan have now told of their heartbreak after each one son’s bed day. The overall condition worsened on December 27 with underdeveloped lungs as CDH struggled to keep up with the rest of the body. At 6.51 a.m. New Year’s Day, Micah sadly ᴘᴀssᴇᴅ ᴀᴡᴀʏ surrounded by loving parents – her sister Brooke, 15, and her grandparents.
Nicole told Ayrshire Live: “We’re heartbroken right now, we don’t know where to put ourselves. We spent six months there all day every day with him. It was his home and it became our home. He took a dip on December 27th, he wasn’t really excellent at all, things just got worse from there. He eventually became a big fat boy, his underdeveloped lungs CDH couldn’t grow to keep up with him. He was so big and so strong that his lungs couldn’t keep up. ”
“We were told they would give us the weekend off if he could even make it for the weekend. We were able to be there with him. We managed to get our mom and dad in to say goodbye, the hospital was amazing, they let them be with us all the time. Whatever we wanted, the hospital did it for us, it was all great to us. Brooke was able to come and spend time with her little brother, she wanted to change his diaper one last time and dress him up and spend that time with her little brother. ”
The family was able to spend their first Christmas together just days before Micah ᴘᴀssᴇᴅ ᴀᴡᴀʏ. Santa Claus visited the specialist unit as the boy was showered with gifts from loved ones. A gift was also sent from the parents of a baby who had been in the previous unit to Micah. Nicole’s mother said: “Christmas there is special. Santa Claus came to see Micah, he received countless presents, he even received a gift from a baby in the ward.” A worm glowed brightly, it loved such things and it was so happy. happiness.
“We have to do all the lovely things any baby can experience at Christmas, we are so grateful for that. Christmas is the first time we return home in six months so we can see our family.” Nicole was informed at 21 weeks pregnant that her baby had CDH and was given the option of terminating the contract by doctors for fear Micah would not survive. He was the happiest kid, the most content despite everything that was going on. You can see how many people he has touched, we are so comforted that he did.
“We are blown away by the support we’ve had, we can’t thank all of our friends and family enough for taking the time to raise funds to try and get us through six months, the hardest six months. “We cannot thank everyone for all their support, all the staff at NICU are amazing and couldn’t do more for us, they are Micah and our superheroes.”
