The man who performed the “exorcism” had previously admitted to domestic abuse.
After reports of an “exorcism” and other suspicious activities at a children’s Bible camp located close to Saskatoon, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and other authorities have launched an investigation into the distressing matter.
In addition to the purported exorcism that took place earlier this summer, it is unknown how the staffer under investigation was ever given permission to work with children at Redberry Bible Camp, which is situated approximately 43 miles north of Saskatoon in Canada.
On the man’s own Facebook pinned to the top of his profile, he admits to a recent and extensive history of pornography and drug addiction, as well as domestic violence.
In addition, he said he was fired from his former job as a camp counselor due to these behaviors—including an incident where his then-girlfriend showed up with visible bruising and injuries.
“This is just nuts. Absolutely astounding,” said Ailsa Watkinson, an emerita professor of social work at the University of Regina with a specialty in child protection, who shared her thoughts on the matter with CBC News.
“If that was my child, I’d be horrified,” Watkinson added.
The alleged exorcism occurred inside one of the camp’s cabins, according to a government official who spoke to CBC News on the condition of anonymity.
Redberry Bible Camp offers various camps for kids between the ages of 8 and 17.
Two witnesses reported seeing a child lying on the floor, bleeding from the nose making concerning sounds while twitching the entire time, according to the official.
The kids went to find help, but when they returned to the scene the staff member conducted an “exorcism” on the child while the other children watched.
The man told the children afterward that by performing the exorcism, he had removed a demon from the child.
After that, he is said to have given each of the children his business card and instructed them to remain in contact with him for the rest of their lives, because he was the only one who knew how to defeat demons.
According to the anonymous government official, many of the children were terrified by what they saw and felt so threatened that they immediately contacted their parents.
Even though the camp had only just begun, many parents decided to take their children home with them that night and the following morning.
They also contacted the police.
Redberry Bible Camp’s board chair told CBC News that the staffer is no longer working at the camp
